Volunteer
We would not be able to do all that we do without the amazing work and support of our volunteer team.
Our Volunteers are legends and we are always looking for more. There are several different ways in which you can volunteer at The Gap. Click on the post-it note below to see our current volunteer roles and how you could help.
The Gap (Midlands) is now offering opportunities for young people completing their Duke of Edinburgh Award, specifically within the Skills section.
At The Gap, we’re passionate about helping young people discover new interests, grow in confidence and supporting young people in their DofE is a great way to do that. We offer a range of opportunities where participants can learn and develop new skills in a supportive and creative environment.
Young people can get involved in activities such as sports, arts and crafts, crocheting, and even recording podcasts or music using our equipment. Whether it’s trying something completely new or building on an existing interest, there’s something for everyone to explore.
Our team is on hand to guide and encourage each participant, helping them set goals, track their progress, and enjoy the journey along the way. It’s not just about completing the award, it’s about gaining confidence, creativity, and a sense of achievement.
If you or someone you know is completing their Duke of Edinburgh Award and looking for a friendly, engaging place to complete their skills section, please do get in touch!
We offer training and all volunteers are supervised by a member of staff. Anyone working with young people needs a recent DBS check and we can help with this.
Venue Volunteers
The Venue is our drop-in that opens after school/college on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 15:30pm - 17:30pm, throughout the year including school holidays, except for bank holidays. The Venue is a safe space for young people to come hang out, play games, chat and make friends.
Venue volunteers should ideally be 18 or over and available for at least one Venue session a fortnight. It is really important to be consistent in building relationships with the young people. Venue volunteers help set out the room before a session, assist with health and safety checks, engage with young people during the sessions and help clear away afterwards.
HeadSpace Mentors
HeadSpace is a project supporting young people in schools and colleges with their mental health and well-being by offering one-to-one support from one of our trained mentors.
Volunteers for this role need to be at least 18 years of age and available for a minimum of a few hours each week, mostly in the mornings and term time, and may also be in the summer holiday. We require a minimum of a recognised Level 3 qualification in mentoring, and The Gap may be able to help fund training costs. The main issues are around poor mental health, anxiety, trauma, self esteem and general mental well-being. Sadly this is a growing problem and we need more volunteers to help our children and young people.
Grant Applications and Fundraising
We need a constant source of funds to keep The Gap "Gapping". If you have a passion for fundraising or are happy to search for and apply for grants and funding to help others then let us know. Every role is important.
Social Media and Admin Volunteers
If you have admin and/or social media skills you can help us to help young people. You can make a big impact.
Mentoring Supervisors
If you have experience in supervising mentors and providing peer-to-peer support for mentors working with children and young people we would love to hear from you. If you can volunteer a few hours each month to help support our mentoring team you can help make a real difference.
Designated Safeguarding Roles
Keeping children and young people safe is at the heart of The Gap. If you have hands-on experience in safeguarding and working with children and young people in particular, or hold a qualification as a designated safeguarding lead (DSL), and can spare a few hours a month then you could join our panel of safeguarding experts.
